EXHIBITION GAMES

There are some handicappers who claim to do very well wagering on the exhibition games. I am not one of them.

I don’t wager on these games because it seems a bad idea to me to wager real money on games that don’t count in the standings. I don’t like being in a position where I care more about the team’s winning than the team does.

There are some bettors who claim that they find out by research—reading newspapers from around the league— which teams care about the exhibition games and which teams don’t. This might be true, but the linesmakers have access to the same facts. Thus, that edge is limited.

However, by watching the exhibition games I have noticed that most teams tend to substitute at the same time. Trying to gauge which second and third-team players will be trying harder seems like a rough task to me.

I don’t even know how these games could be power rated. I have enough trouble power rating each team’s first string during the regular season. Trying to power rate a team’s third-string players going against another team’s second-string players seems impossible—at least for me.
